Here’s the part most people don’t realize: you don’t need a truck, a hitch, or any towing experience. You book your campsite at South Toledo Bend State Park (or wherever you land on the lake), and I bring the RV to you. I back it in, level it, get it on the hookups, run through the water and electric, and walk you through every system before I leave. The back loops at these Toledo Bend campgrounds can run tight and a little sloped down toward the water, so I bring leveling blocks and take the time to set the rig right — a crooked fridge and a tilted bed will ruin a trip fast. When you pull out at the end of the week, you just lock up and go. I come back and handle the rest.

When to book — the Toledo Bend seasons I see every year

The calendar out here is predictable once you’ve done this as long as I have. Spring (March through May) is prime bass season and my busiest stretch — if you want a lakeside weekend in April, book several weeks out because the good state park sites disappear first. Summer gets hot and humid in Sabine Parish, so I make sure the air conditioning is dialed in and tested before I leave; July and August are family-and-pontoon season more than serious fishing. Fall cools off and the lake quiets down, which honestly might be my favorite time to send people out here. And come November, the Zwolle Tamale Fiesta crowd up the road keeps things busy. My advice: the earlier you call, the better your shot at a waterfront site instead of an interior loop.

What to do besides fish

People come for the bass, but there’s plenty around here once you’re off the water. From a base near Ragley and South Toledo Bend State Park, you’re set up to explore a big chunk of Toledo Bend Country:

• Toledo Bend Lake — bass fishing, crappie, boating, and swimming; the reason most of my renters are out here.
• Kisatchie National Forest & the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway — hiking, scenic drives, and the kind of pine-forest backroads you can’t find on the Texas side.
• Fort Jesup State Historic Site — an easy history stop near Many for a slower afternoon.
• Hodges Gardens State Park — gardens and overlooks south of Florien off US-171.
• Toro Hills Resort & golf course in Florien — handy if half your group golfs while the other half fishes.
• Natchitoches Historic District — about an hour east and worth a day trip for the brick streets and meat pies.

Getting here and where you’ll actually camp

Most folks reach the South Toledo Bend area by coming down US-171 through Many or up from Leesville and Fort Polk, then cutting over on LA-191 or LA-6 toward the lake. If you’re flying in, Shreveport Regional (SHV) and Alexandria International (AEX) are both about an hour and a half out, and Polk Army Airfield (POE) near Leesville is closer at roughly 45 minutes south. Once you’re in, the South Toledo Bend State Park near Anacoco is the go-to for full-hookup overnight RV camping on this end of the lake, and there are other good options around the reservoir like Pleasure Point Landing near Many and the North Toledo Bend State Park up at Zwolle.
